Trouble over the legal cultivation of cannabis in Berlin

Cannabis in Germany: Between chaos and hope – A lot has happened since the partial legalization of cannabis in Germany, but not everything is going as you might have imagined. The RBB documentary shows the challenges facing cannabis social clubs, home growers and consumers. Read here what is currently happening – and why the road to legal cannabis is still rocky.

Growers’ associations: chaos instead of clarity

You may have noticed that the cultivation associations in Germany were supposed to have taken off a long time ago. But chaos reigns, especially in Berlin: there are neither clear responsibilities nor authorities capable of making decisions. The clubs can plan, but they can’t grow. This is frustrating for many members who are finally looking forward to legal cannabis. The clubs want to work efficiently, but large cultivation communities are being held back for fear of commercialization. Instead of progress, there is a hangover.

Self-cultivation: still a dream of the future for many

For some, home-growing is a solution – at least on paper. Three plants per person are allowed, but there are hurdles here too. According to the law, you are only allowed to possess 50 grams of consumable cannabis. But what do you do with the rest of the harvest? Some freeze it, others destroy it – which is pretty sad, isn’t it? For growers like Benjamin Prüfert, who lives with ADHD and can do without medication thanks to cannabis, home-growing is a great help. But he also struggles with problems such as pests and low yields. As you can see, home-growing is not easy.

The black market remains present

A major goal of legalization was to curb the black market. But without functioning growers’ associations or legal sales outlets, this is difficult. Many consumers, like Peyman in the documentary, continue to fall back on their dealers. Although there are now better labeled products on the black market, quality and safety remain a problem. Even growers say: “We want to be better than the black market, but we have to be allowed to get started first.”

Cannabis Social Clubs: Waiting for the start

The cannabis social clubs, such as the one in Berlin with over 7,000 members, are in the starting blocks. However, the Berlin Senate and the districts are still arguing about responsibilities. The clubs need a license and have to present comprehensive addiction prevention concepts. Torsten Dietrich, chairman of one club, hopes that everything will be sorted out soon. However, it is still unclear when the clubs will actually be allowed to grow cannabis containing THC. So for you as a potential member, all that remains is to wait and see.

Cannabis conferences and the community

The documentary also shows how the cannabis community organizes itself despite the obstacles. At trade fairs such as “Mary Jane” in Berlin, the scene meets, exchanges knowledge and discusses the future. Particularly exciting: cultivation workshops and consultations where you can learn how to optimally care for your plants. A great opportunity for beginners and experienced growers to learn more and strengthen the community.
