Cannabis legalization: Current laws in Germany
We have probably all heard about the legalization of cannabis, but what exactly applies now is not always so clear. Here is a brief and clear explanation of what the new cannabis law introduced in April 2024 means, how consumption in public spaces now works and what special features apply to you as a patient of
What specifically has changed?
The new laws that have regulated the handling of cannabis and cannabis products in Germany since April 1, 2024 are:
- Medical Cannabis Act, MedCanG for short (external)
- Consumer Cannabis Act, KCanG for short (external)
The Medical Cannabis Act regulates the medical use of cannabis in Germany and gives patients with a cannabis prescription access to medical cannabis. The Consumer Cannabis Act, on the other hand, concerns private and communal

Regulations also apply to the medical use of cannabis, but these are different from those for recreational users.
- Compulsory prescription! You must still have your medicinal cannabis prescribed by a doctor
- You can have up to
100 grams per month – depending on your prescription
One advantage for you as a patient: with a prescription, you can also possess and carry larger quantities than 50 grams. This protects you in case you are stopped by the police on your way home from the pharmacy.

The consumer cannabis law in Germany
Since legalization, there are finally clear guidelines for the use of cannabis for recreational purposes. The law is not only intended to regulate access, but also to increase safety and curb the black market. What does that mean for you?
- You are allowed to carry 25 grams of cannabis
- You are allowed to have 50 grams in your home
- You can only buy it from
licensed growers or pharmacies with a prescription - You may
grow 3 plants for your own use - Consumption remains prohibited for young people and children
- Buying on the black market remains illegal
These rules ensure that the use of cannabis is finally safer and more clearly regulated. They offer you the opportunity to enjoy cannabis without having to fear legal consequences and provide legal options for acquiring cannabis.
Tip: With a prescription for medicinal cannabis, you may also possess and carry up to 100 grams of cannabis. The cannabis prescription serves as a certificate for this. However, you may not exceed the prescribed amount. Get your cannabis prescription now: Request treatment
Laws for cannabis in everyday life
You may be wondering where and when you are allowed to consume cannabis. In principle, cannabis consumption is now permitted, but there are exceptions. You should be more careful, especially in public, to avoid conflicts and misunderstandings.
What you should know
Although the consumption of cannabis is now legal, it may not be consumed everywhere. The main reason for this is to protect children and young people and to avoid disturbing others.
- You can consume undisturbed within your own four walls
- Large events and pedestrian zones are taboo
- Respect the people around you and be considerate
- Consumption is not permitted in the vicinity of children and young people (if in doubt, use the
Bubatz card ) - Just like near schools, kindergartens and playgrounds
These clear regulations help to make the use of cannabis accessible but responsible – in a way that is acceptable to all, users and non-users alike.
Cannabis and road traffic
As with alcohol, the same applies to cannabis: consumption and driving do not go together. If you have consumed cannabis, you should wait 24 hours before getting behind the wheel, or until the effects have completely worn off.
- The permitted THC limit in the blood is 3.5 nanograms per milliliter
- Violations can result in high fines, points in Flensburg and the withdrawal of your driver’s license
Road safety is a top priority – not only for you, but also for other road users. Stay responsible and find out more about the current regulations on cannabis in road traffic:

Cannabis in the workplace
There are also clear rules in the workplace. The use of cannabis during working hours is not permitted in most professions, especially in safety-relevant areas. Employers may take action if you are under the influence of cannabis during working hours.
- Particularly strict regulations apply in safety-related professions
- Employers may carry out tests if there is reasonable suspicion
- Violations can lead to warnings or dismissal

Now you can enjoy cannabis legally

Whether you use it privately or need it for medicinal purposes – the new laws create a clear framework that you can adhere to.
