Does medical cannabis really help? TK study breaks down – where marijuana really helps

Wondering whether medicinal cannabis can really help you? You’re not alone! More and more patients in Germany are interested in this form of therapy – and research is also taking a closer look. According to a summary by Techniker Krankenkasse (TK), there is now solid evidence for some diseases, while research is still ongoing in other areas. The TK report provides a comprehensive overview: When does cannabis help and where are studies uncertain.

When does medicinal cannabis help?

Cannabis Studien & Ergebnisse präsentiert

Cannabis studies have shown particularly good results in patients with severe or chronic illnesses. Typical areas of application are

  • Chronic pain – e.g. nerve pain or cancer pain, often with a better effect than placebos.
  • Spasticity – those affected by multiple sclerosis or paraplegia report noticeable relief.
  • Epilepsy – especially rare forms such as Dravet or Lennox-Gastaut syndrome show positive study results.
  • Nausea and vomiting after chemotherapy – cannabis can help where other medications fail.
  • Loss of appetite in HIV/AIDS – some studies indicate an appetite-increasing effect.

Many patients report that they sleep better, have less pain or feel better overall thanks to cannabis. Important: The effect is individual – that’s why your cannabis doctor will guide you through the treatment and help you find the right strain and dosage.

Where is the study situation still uncertain?

There are diseases for which the effect has not yet been sufficiently researched. Doctors always decide on an individual basis:

  • Anxiety disorders – studies show mixed results.
  • Sleep disorders – no clear evidence to date.
  • Tourette’s syndrome – individual studies indicate a reduction in tics, but you can also find many positive Tourette’s experience reports on YouTube & Co.
  • ADHD – anecdotal reports, but little scientific evidence.

Even if the data is sparse, some patients report improvements. A medical assessment is therefore important in order to weigh up the benefits and risks on an individual basis.

5 myths about cannabis as medicine

What can medical cannabis therapy really achieve?

Why are studies so important?

Medical cannabis is only recommended in Germany if other therapies are not sufficient or are not tolerated. According to the TK, many long-term studies are still needed to better understand safety and efficacy for various indications. However, current findings show that cannabis can be a valuable supplement for some diseases – provided that the treatment is individually supervised.
