What do the values mean?

Lifetime prevalence indicates how many people have used cannabis at least once in their lifetime. The 12-month and 30-day prevalence rates show the proportion of people who have used cannabis in the respective period. The figures are a clear indication that cannabis is becoming increasingly present in society, especially among young people.

Development since 1993

The graph shows the development of cannabis use among adolescents and young adults in Germany in the period from 1993 to 2021. Particularly striking is the sharp increase in lifetime prevalence from 16.3% in 1993 to 34.6% in 2021. Regular use has also more than doubled from 2.3% to 5.9%.

Background information

This data was collected by the Federal Center for Health Education (BZgA) as part of a long-term study. A total of 7,004 adolescents and young adults aged between 12 and 25 were surveyed. You can find out more about the effects and risks of cannabis in our article on cannabis and health.

It is interesting to note that the increase in prevalence has increased significantly, particularly after 2011 – a sign of social and cultural changes.
