Who was Mr. Nice? The man with 43 identities

Howard Marks was born in Wales in 1945 – well-behaved, Catholic, ambitious. He studied physics at Oxford, graduated with honors and was about to embark on a career in science. But the world outside the lecture hall smelled of adventure – and weed. And so the physicist became a smuggler with over 43 fake identities, transporting tons of hashish around the world (source documentary, see link).

“I’ve been a teacher, a writer, an MI6 agent, a prisoner – but through it all, my goal has always been the same: to push the boundaries of cannabis.” – Howard Marks

Entering the smuggling business

His career began in the late 1960s with small quantities of grass from Afghanistan and Pakistan. It quickly grew into tons. Mr. Nice used diplomatic networks, international smuggling tricks and personal contacts with underworld figures such as the IRA and Colombian cartels.

His stops: London, Bangkok, Amsterdam, Jamaica – even the CIA was hot on his heels. And yet: Marks never came across as a gangster. Rather like a gentleman smuggler with humor and attitude.

From prison to cult figure: the transformation of Mr. Nice

In 1988, Howard Marks was arrested in Spain and extradited to the USA. He spent seven years in a maximum security prison there – and then wrote his famous book “Mr. Nice”, which became an international bestseller.

From criminal to pioneer

After his imprisonment, he toured the UK with a humorous live program that oscillated between reading, stand-up and political statement, almost like Tommy Chong. He appeared on talk shows, spoke at demos – and became the voice of an entire scene. Mr Nice was suddenly everywhere.

Here is the trailer for the film adaptation of “Mr. Nice”.

The YouTube video: Insights into his real life

The following video shows Howard Marks on a personal journey back in time – through Amsterdam, Jamaica and Switzerland. He visits the Sensi Seed Museum, talks about his legendary strain Mr Nice and shows how cannabis helped him to stay true to himself – even in the darkest times.

Mr Nice – The cannabis strain with cult status

Together with legendary breeder Ben Dronkers, a strain was created that is still popular today: G13 x Hash Plant = Mr Nice. This genetics allegedly originates from a stolen plant from the DEA, was perfected in Holland and is now an integral part of every real seed bank.

The variety stands for:

  • A deeply relaxing body sensation
  • A soft, sweetish smoke
  • A clear, meditative effect

Not a myth, but a legacy

Mr Nice lives on – not only through his book, but in every feminized plant that bears his name. And even though Howard Marks died of cancer in 2016, his influence on the cannabis community remains unbroken.

Interview with Mr. Nice (RIP)

Howard Marks was more than a smuggler – he was a philosopher with a joint, a border crosser with style, an activist with heart. He showed that cannabis is more than just an intoxicant – it is culture, attitude, a symbol of self-determination.

Mr Nice says: “Don’t worry about the pigs – just plant the seed.”
