Lollipopping: cannabis cultivation, shoots and larger flowers

Lollipopping – Have you ever wondered why the lower shoots of some plants are missing and the flowers at the top grow all the more vigorously? Then you’ll find the lollipopping method exciting! After looking at the SCROG method (cultivation with netting = more light, more flowers) yesterday, today we’re going to look at lollipopping, which sounds delicious and produces more yield. Tip! You can see the method live in the video (below).

What does lollipopping mean for cannabis?

Lollipopping is a targeted pruning technique in which the lower third of the plant is removed – making it look like a lollipop: bare at the bottom, bushy at the top. The aim is to concentrate the plant’s energy on the upper, light-rich buds.

Why the lower shoots are disturbing

Shoots in the lower area often receive too little light and only develop small, fluffy flowers. These “popcorn buds” cost the plant energy, but provide hardly any yield. You can avoid these inefficient flowering zones with targeted pruning.

This creates more quality at the top

By removing the lower shoots, the entire strength of the plant is directed to the main buds – this not only increases the yield, but also significantly improves the potency, density and resin content of the upper flowers.

When do you lollipop?

Timing is crucial when lollipopping. If cut too early or too late, it can stress the plant. Done correctly, however, it is a booster for quality and uniformity.

Ideal time: beginning of the flowering phase

The best time for lollipopping is a few days before or right at the start of flowering. During this phase, the plant has enough energy for regeneration, while at the same time you are directing growth upwards.

Technology: Clean, targeted, low-stress

The lower side shoots and small leaves are removed with clean scissors – do not tear or bruise! It is important that only shoots that are clearly below the light zone and show no development are removed.

  • Improves air circulation in the lower area
  • Reduces the risk of mold and pests
  • Promotes even development of the main buds
  • Particularly effective in combination with SCROG

Why we rely on lollipopping at CannaZen

Our partner in North Macedonia uses this method consistently – and for good reason. The results speak for themselves: strong buds, better aroma and clean-structured plants that are easier to harvest.

More yield – less waste

Lollipopping results in fewer unusable flower remnants. The plants invest all their energy in the upper part – this is how we get the best out of each variety.

Quality improvement through targeted control

Together with topping and SCROG, lollipopping is an integral part of our plant physiology training. Each measure helps to exploit the full genetic potential – with a noticeable effect for our patients.

Conclusion: Clear structure for clear quality

Lollipopping is a real game changer in indoor cultivation. Less ballast, more focus – for flowers that can be seen and tasted. If you want to know exactly what this looks like, take a look at our latest video or discover our hand-picked varieties directly in the store.
