Friday: One joint, one problem! Classic stoner humor film

Friday (1995) is a milestone in the genre of stoner films – but also much more than that. The comedy by and starring Ice Cube combines classic stoner humor with a realistic look at life in South Central L.A. The film takes place on a single day and thrives on its strong characters, iconic one-liners and the mixture of everyday comedy and serious undertones. Anyone hoping only for silly jokes will be surprised: “Friday” is also a social portrait with heart – and that’s exactly what makes it timeless. Back to: The best “stoner” movies.

What is Friday the movie about?

Craig(Ice Cube) has just lost his job and is hanging out on the veranda with his best buddy Smokey(Chris Tucker) on a hot Friday. Actually, they just wanted to chill – but then everything escalates: debt collectors, neighbors, drug dealers and a stolen necklace turn a boring day into a real adventure. While Smokey is constantly smoking weed, Craig somehow tries to keep control – which of course doesn’t work.

  • A movie that takes place on a single day
  • Weed, anger, humor – and lots of neighborhood drama
  • Legendary dialog like: “You got knocked the f*** out!”

Cast: Ice Cube & Chris Tucker in a dream duo

The chemistry between Ice Cube and Chris Tucker is the driving force behind the movie. Ice Cube plays the down-to-earth but easily irritable Craig – his first time as a screenwriter and leading actor. Many of the supporting roles also shine: From John Witherspoon as Craig’s quirky father to Tiny Lister as the menacing Deebo.

  1. Ice Cube – serious, cool, but overwhelmed
  2. Chris Tucker – loud, stoned, legendary
  3. John Witherspoon – best toilet joke in movie history
  4. Tiny Lister as Deebo – the ghetto bully par excellence
