Delta-3-carene cannabis terpene: aroma, taste, effect & impact
Delta-3-carene is a little-known but potent terpene in cannabis. It is characterized by a woody-fresh aroma and is associated with positive effects on memory, bone formation and mood. In combination with THC or other cannabinoids, it can contribute to the entourage effect. It is also found in rosemary, cedarwood and juniper. Similar terpenes are alpha-pinene, eucalyptol and terpinolene. Back to terpenes in cannabis.
Delta-3-Caren: What is it?

einfach erklärt

einfach erklärt
Delta-3-carene is a bicyclic monoterpene with a rather dry, slightly woody scent. It is also valued in nature as a component of essential oils, for example in cypress oil or pine extracts. It is less common in cannabis than myrcene or linalool, but is nevertheless important for the overall effect of certain strains.
Typical strains with a lot of delta-3 carene are Super Lemon Haze, Jack Herer, AK-47 or Durban Poison.
- Occurs in rosemary, pine, cedar and cannabis
- Woody, slightly sweet fragrance with a fresh note
- Effect on cognition, bones, inflammation
Botanical origin
Delta-3-carene is a secondary plant substance that often serves as a natural defense against fungi and insects – but also has a potential anti-inflammatory and nerve-protective effect for us.
Smell and aroma of delta-3 carene
The aroma of Delta-3-Caren is reminiscent of dry pine needles, cypress or juniper. It is described as woody-fresh and slightly sweet – rarely floral or fruity. This profile often ensures clarity and lightness in the bouquet of a cannabis strain.
- Aroma: cypress, wood, dry, mildly sweet
- Aroma: Woody, gentle, not intrusive
- Association: stability, nature, grounding
Aroma profile in cannabis
Delta-3-carene often occurs together with alpha-pinene and enhances its forest character. Terpinolene also produces a pleasantly green fragrance profile.
“Delta-3-carene could play an important role in bone regeneration – current research is focusing intensively on its influence on inflammatory processes and Alzheimer’s disease.” – Excerpt from ‘Frontiers in Pharmacology’, 2021
Effect of delta-3-carene
Medically, delta-3-carene is interesting for cognitive processes, mood and bone health. Initial studies suggest that it has an anti-inflammatory effect and can promote calcium absorption in the body – which could be relevant for osteoporosis or arthritis.

- Possible effect on Alzheimer’s or joint problems
Research & medical potential
Delta-3-carene is currently being investigated for its neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory effects. Of particular interest is the connection with bone density and its effect on certain signaling substances in the nervous system.
Similar terpenes
These terpenes have a similar effect or complement delta-3-carene in combination:
- Alpha-pinene: concentration-enhancing, bronchodilator
- Eucalyptol: antibacterial, focusing, cooling
- Terpinolene: antioxidant, stress-reducing, floral
Terpenes?! Where are they actually?
Terpenes can be found on the flower of the cannabis plant. There are (illustrated here for you):
- Pestles – small threads
- Trichomes – small balls
- Terpenes – are inside the small spheres
In fact, the myth of the difference between sativa, indica and hybrid is true. The real effect comes from the terpenes in combination with the cannabinoids (THC, CBD, etc.)
Terpenes in cannabis
A total of over 150 different terpenes have been identified in the cannabis plant. Of these, around 20-30 terpenes occur regularly in relevant quantities and have potential medicinal effects.
