Eucalyptol cannabis terpene: aroma, taste, effect & impact

Eucalyptol is a minty-fresh terpene in the cannabis plant with clear potential for concentration, cognitive performance and bacterial defense. It belongs to the family of oxygen-containing monoterpenes and is particularly effective in combination with cannabinoids such as THC. It could play an important role in the entourage effect. In nature, it is mainly found in the eucalyptus tree, but also in laurel, mint and cannabis. Similar terpenes: alpha-pinene, geraniol or terpinolene. Back to terpenes in cannabis.

Eucalyptol: What is it?

einfach erklärt

Eucalyptol – also known as 1,8-cineole – is a cyclic monoterpene with a distinctly fresh, menthol-like scent. It is found in numerous medicinal plants and has been used in pharmacy for decades for respiratory diseases. It is less common in cannabis, but can be specifically cultivated in certain varieties.

Typical varieties with a lot of eucalyptol are Super Silver Haze, Girl Scout Cookies, Headband or London Pound Cake.

  • Structure: Monoterpene with oxygen group
  • Fragrance: minty, cooling, pungent
  • Origin: eucalyptus, mint, laurel, cannabis

Plant origin

Eucalyptol is primarily found in plants with a medicinal tradition – for example in cough drops or cold baths. In cannabis, it contributes to the fresh aroma of some indica varieties.

Smell and aroma of eucalyptol

Eucalyptol has a very clear, fresh aroma that is often reminiscent of menthol – but without its biting sharpness. It conveys coolness, cleanliness and clarity and is often used as an “air opener” in perfumes and cosmetic products.

  • Aroma: minty, fresh, slightly sweetish
  • Aroma: cooling, herbal, almost medicinal
  • Association: clarity, concentration, purity

Sensory profile

In combination with alpha-pinene, eucalyptol enhances the feeling of freshness and mental alertness – ideal for daytime workouts.

“Eucalyptol is a promising terpene in the neurocognitive field – especially for Alzheimer’s and concentration disorders. Its effects range from antimicrobial to anti-inflammatory.” – Specialist journal *Phytomedicine*, 2020

Effect of eucalyptol

Eucalyptol has a wide range of effects: it can increase concentration, inhibit inflammation and slow down the growth of bacteria and fungi. Studies are also currently investigating its potential to help with neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s.

  • Antibacterial & antifungal
  • Possible use for Alzheimer’s disease

Research situation

Animal studies and initial clinical trials indicate that small amounts of eucalyptol can improve cognitive performance and calm the central nervous system – without having a sedative effect.

Terpenes?! Where are they actually?

Terpenes can be found on the flower of the cannabis plant. There are (illustrated here for you):

  1. Pestles – small threads
  2. Trichomes – small balls
  3. Terpenes – are inside the small spheres

In fact, the myth of the difference between sativa, indica and hybrid is true. The real effect comes from the terpenes in combination with the cannabinoids (THC, CBD, etc.)

Terpenes in cannabis

A total of over 150 different terpenes have been identified in the cannabis plant. Of these, around 20-30 terpenes occur regularly in relevant quantities and have potential medicinal effects. Find out more about indications (diseases), taste, aroma and effect! What can which terpene do?
