Cannabis cultivation seeds 2/9: Germinating cannabis seeds, methods & tips
Cannabis cultivation: Germinating cannabis seeds – The germination process is the very first step in your cannabis cultivation and one of the most important after your cultivation preparation. Successful germination lays the foundation for healthy, vigorous plants that will later produce rich harvests. During germination, the seed is activated from its dormant phase and forms the first roots, which then lay the foundation for the entire
Choosing the right seeds

“If you’re growing indoors, use photoperiod feminized seeds – you can control them and get flowers, guaranteed.” – BrothersGrow
Cannabis seeds can come in different forms: feminized seeds, regular seeds or autoflowering seeds. If you want to be on the safe side and ensure that you only get female plants that produce the coveted flowers, feminized seeds are the best choice. Autoflowering seeds are also suitable for beginners, as they flower independently of the light cycle and are easier to care for. Make sure you buy high-quality seeds from a reputable supplier.
Which seeds should you use?
- Feminized seeds: Guarantee female plants that produce flowers.
- Autoflowering seeds: Ideal for beginners as they flower automatically.
- Regular seeds: Can produce male and female plants.

Preparation for germination
“Humid environment, even heat – then germination almost always works.” – BrothersGrow
“Humid environment, even heat – then germination almost always works.” – BrothersGrow
Preparation is crucial to ensure that your seeds have the best conditions to germinate. The first step is to check the seeds for germination. High quality seeds are usually firm, dark brown and hard. Make sure you have all the materials ready: clean water, a paper towel or special germination plates and a plate or germination box.
What you need:
- Fresh, healthy seeds.
- Paper towels or germination plates.
- A plate or mini-greenhouse.
- Water (ideally stale & room temperature).

The most popular method: The paper towel method
“If you want to see if the seed germinates, the damp cloth is the easiest – but be careful when repotting.” – BrothersGrow
This method is simple and efficient. You can check daily whether a root is already forming. It is important that the cloths always remain moist – but never too wet!
Steps in the paper towel process:
- Place a damp paper towel on a plate.
- Place the seeds between them at a distance.
- Cover the seeds with a second damp cloth.
- Create a humid microclimate with a second plate or foil.
- Store at 21-25 °C in a dark place.
- Check daily. Plant as soon as the root is visible.

Alternatives for germination: Directly in the soil or in substrate
“Many paths lead to success – find the one that suits you.” – BrothersGrow
Less time-consuming, but more difficult to control. Direct germination in pots or easy plugs works great if the temperature and humidity are right.
Steps for direct germination:
- Make the substrate (e.g. potting compost or Jiffy) slightly moist.
- Plant the seeds 0.5-1 cm deep and cover lightly.
- Location: warm (21-25 °C), moist and dark.
- Tip: Heating mat + mini-greenhouse improve the germination rate.

What should you pay attention to during germination?
“Don’t fiddle around in the pot – patience is more important than control here.” – BrothersGrow
The germination process takes between 2 and 7 days. Avoid waterlogging, keep the temperature constant and ensure air circulation if you are using germination boxes. As soon as the root is approx. 1 cm long, the seed can be planted (root facing downwards).
Important points:
- Keep humidity stable.
- Touch the seedling as little as possible.
- Light only necessary after emergence from the ground.

Common germination mistakes and how to avoid them
“Too much love is not good for the seeds – watering is the classic.” – BrothersGrow
Mistakes such as incorrect temperature, excessive moisture or inserting too deep are common – but easy to avoid.
Avoid these mistakes:
- Never place in dripping wet substrate.
- No light in the germination phase – cannabis is a dark germinator.
- Never check impatiently – this damages the root.

Conclusion: The key to successful germination
“If you pay attention to the basics – moisture, warmth, rest – your grow will be rewarded with a stable start.” – BrothersGrow
Germinating cannabis seeds is easy – if you have patience and pay attention to temperature and humidity. Whether paper towel, easy plug or pot: all methods work. The decisive factor is that you adhere to the general conditions and do not stress the seedling.
Continue with part 3: Growing, nutrients, lighting & care
After your seeds have successfully germinated, the next important phase in growing cannabis begins: cultivation and vegetative growth. This phase is crucial, as the root system, stems and leaves of your plants develop during this time, which later form the basis for strong and high-yielding flowers.
