Cannabis cultivation preparation 1/9: Seeds, lighting, indoor or outdoor?

Before you start growing cannabis, thorough preparation is crucial to ensure that your plants have the best possible growing conditions. The preparation phase includes choosing the right seeds, deciding on the growing location (indoor or outdoor), selecting the lighting and obtaining the necessary nutrients. Each of these decisions has a significant impact on the entire growing process and the subsequent yield of your plants. In part 1/9, you will learn what you should pay attention to during preparation. The next part is all about the right cannabis seeds. From your cultivation preparations to the harvest, here you will find our cannabis cultivation tips + grow guide (3 videos).

Choosing the right seeds

Tip! You can find our video tutorial with & from GebrüderGrow a little further down.

“Feminized seeds are the easiest for beginners because you don’t have to worry about male plants.” – BrothersGrow

The choice of cannabis seeds is large and each variety has its own characteristics in terms of growth, flowering time, yield and effect. You have to decide whether you want to use feminized seeds, regular seeds or autoflowering seeds. Feminized seeds are ideal for beginners, as they only produce female plants that bear the flowers. Autoflowering seeds, on the other hand, flower independently of the light cycle and are often easier to care for.

Types of seeds:

  1. Feminized seeds: Produce only female plants and are ideal for flower production.
  2. Regular seeds: Can produce both male and female plants, which means more effort.
  3. Autoflowering seeds: Flower automatically after a certain time, regardless of the light cycle.

The ideal growing location: indoors or outdoors?

“You can control everything in the tent – temperature, light, humidity. Outdoors works too, but is less predictable.” – BrothersGrow

Another basic decision you need to make is whether you want to grow your plants indoors or outdoors. Both growing methods have their pros and cons, and your decision will depend on several factors, including available space, control over environmental conditions and desired yield. Indoor growing gives you more control over light, temperature and humidity, but requires extensive equipment. Outdoor growing is generally less costly, but exposes you to the vagaries of the weather.

Advantages and disadvantages of indoor and outdoor:

  • Indoor cultivation: Full control over environmental conditions, but more expensive in terms of equipment.
  • Outdoor cultivation: Lower costs and natural cycle, but dependent on weather and seasons.

The right lighting for indoor cultivation

“Light is the be-all and end-all. Without good light – no good growth. Quite simply.” – BrothersGrow

If you decide to grow indoors, choosing the right lighting is crucial. Cannabis needs plenty of light during the growth phase to develop strong, healthy plants. There are different types of lighting that are suitable for cannabis cultivation, including LED lamps, HPS lamps (high pressure sodium lamps) and fluorescent tubes. Each of these lamps has its own advantages and disadvantages. LED lamps are energy efficient and give off little heat, while HPS lamps offer a stronger light output but generate more heat.

Types of lighting:

  • LED lamps: Energy-efficient and generate little heat.
  • HPS lamps: High light output, but more heat.
  • Fluorescent tubes: Good for the early growth phase, less suitable for flowering.

Choosing the right substrate

“Soil is forgiving. If you water or fertilize too much, all is not lost.” – BrothersGrow

Another important aspect of preparation is the choice of substrate in which your plants are to grow. The substrate provides support for the roots and stores water and nutrients. You can use different substrates for growing cannabis, such as soil, coco fiber or hydroponics. Soil is the most popular and easiest to handle substrate, while coco fibers offer better aeration and faster nutrient absorption. Hydroponics, on the other hand, does not require a substrate in the conventional sense, as the plants grow directly in a nutrient solution.

Types of substrates:

  • Soil: Easy to handle and well suited for beginners.
  • Coconut fibers: Better aeration and nutrient absorption.
  • Hydroponics: Plants grow directly in a nutrient solution, no conventional substrate required.

Important nutrients for healthy growth

“Put in slow-release fertilizer, water – done. Really pleasant, especially for beginners.” – BrothersGrow

To ensure that your plants grow healthily, they need a balanced supply of nutrients. Cannabis plants need three main nutrients: nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K). These nutrients are crucial for the growth, flowering and yield of the plant. In addition to these main nutrients, plants also require micronutrients such as calcium, magnesium and iron, which are needed in smaller quantities but are just as important.

The three main nutrients:

  • Nitrogen (N): Supports leaf growth.
  • Phosphorus (P): Promotes flower formation.
  • Potassium (K): Strengthens the roots and increases resistance.

Irrigation and pH value

“Less is more – too much water will kill your plant faster than too little.” – BrothersGrow

In addition to nutrients, correct watering is also an essential part of successful cannabis cultivation. Make sure that your plants are watered evenly and regularly, but avoid waterlogging as this can damage the roots. The pH value of the water is just as important. Cannabis thrives best in a slightly acidic soil with a pH between 6.0 and 7.0. If the pH is too high or too low, the plants cannot absorb nutrients properly, which can lead to growth problems.

Tips for correct watering:

  • Water evenly and regularly, avoid waterlogging.
  • Keep an eye on the pH value of the water.
  • The ideal pH value is between 6.0 and 7.0.

Good preparation is the key to success

“Mistakes are part of the game – don’t go crazy, learn from them and have fun.” – BrothersGrow

Preparation is one of the most important steps in cannabis cultivation. Choosing the right seeds, growing location, lighting, substrate and nutrients has a direct impact on the health and yield of your plants. By preparing everything thoroughly in the planning phase and optimizing the conditions, you lay the foundation for a successful harvest.

Continue with part 2: Germinating cannabis seeds, methods & tips

The germination process is the very first step in your cannabis cultivation and one of the most important. Successful germination lays the foundation for healthy, strong plants that will later produce rich harvests.
