Phytol cannabis terpene: aroma, taste, effect & impact
Phytol is a naturally occurring terpene with a soft, green aroma found in cannabis, green tea and chlorophyll-containing plants. It unfolds its potential in the entourage effect together with cannabinoids such as THC. Its effects and scent are similar to myrcene, linalool and nerolidol. This article shows you its effects, aroma and medicinal potential – and why phytol is more than just a “secondary terpene”. Back to terpenes in cannabis.
Phytol: What is it?

einfach erklärt

einfach erklärt
Phytol is an acyclic diterpene alcohol that is produced during the breakdown of chlorophyll. It is found in green tea, hemp and algae and is being studied medicinally for its calming properties.
Typical strains with a lot of phytol are Sour Diesel, Headband, OG Kush or Super Silver Haze.
- Formed from chlorophyll
- Contained in green tea, cannabis and algae
- Also used in perfumery and medicine
Phytol in cannabis profiles
Phytol occurs in smaller quantities, but is clearly detectable in certain hemp varieties – especially in varieties with a gentle, relaxing effect.
Smell and aroma of phytol
Phytol has a slightly herbaceous, green aroma reminiscent of freshly cut grass or green tea. In combination with other terpenes, it creates a gentle, relaxing fragrance.
- Odor: green, fresh, herbal
- Associations: green tea, grass, moist plants
- Ideal for calming aroma profiles
Sensory significance

As a deep base note, phytol helps to round off the overall fragrance and softens more intense terpenes such as limonene or pinene. Particularly suitable for varieties with a “mild” nose.
Effect of Phytol
Phytol has a calming, antioxidant and possibly tumor-inhibiting effect. Studies suggest that it could have an anxiolytic and sleep-inducing effect – it is also said to strengthen the immune system.
- Soothing, relaxing
- Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory
- Antitumor effects possible
- Used in anti-ageing cosmetics and food supplements
Medical relevance
Phytol is of interest for its potential neuroprotective effect and as an antioxidant. It is also increasingly being considered in research into anxiety disorders and sleep problems.
Similar terpenes
These terpenes are similar to phytol in effect and scent:
- Myrcene: earthy, sedative, relaxing
- Nerolidol: calming, slightly floral, antimicrobial
- Linalool: floral, anxiety-relieving, pain-relieving
Terpenes?! Where are they actually?
Terpenes can be found on the flower of the cannabis plant. There are (illustrated here for you):
- Pestles – small threads
- Trichomes – small balls
- Terpenes – are inside the small spheres
In fact, the myth of the difference between sativa, indica and hybrid is true. The real effect comes from the terpenes in combination with the cannabinoids (THC, CBD, etc.)
Terpenes in cannabis
A total of over 150 different terpenes have been identified in the cannabis plant. Of these, around 20-30 terpenes occur regularly in relevant quantities and have potential medicinal effects.
