Dr. Raphael Mechoulam: discoverer of THC, CBD and the endocannabinoid system

Dr. Raphael Mechoulam is considered the “father of cannabis research”. In the 1960s, the Israeli chemist was the first to discover the chemical structure of THC and later CBD – a pioneering scientific achievement that paved the way for modern cannabis medicine. Together with his team, he also laid the foundations for understanding the endocannabinoid system – the system in the human body that processes cannabinoids. Today I’ll show you who Mechoulam was, what fascinated him about cannabis and why no legalization movement would be conceivable without him. Back to all cannabis legends.

Who was Dr. Raphael Mechoulam?

Raphael Mechoulam was born in Sofia, Bulgaria, in 1930 and fled to Israel with his family to escape the Holocaust. He studied chemistry at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, where he later became a professor. Even as a young man, he was interested in the question: Why do we know everything about nicotine and alcohol, but hardly anything about cannabis?

Cannabinoide in Cannabis

This question led him to isolate and identify THC – the main psychoactive substance in cannabis(cannabinoids) – in 1964. CBD followed later, and finally his team discovered anandamide, an endogenous cannabinoid.

  • Born 1930 in Sofia, Bulgaria
  • Professor of organic chemistry in Jerusalem
  • Introduced cannabis to modern science

Mechoulam who? 5 things you should know

  1. 1964: Discoverer of THC
  2. 1980s: Decoded the endocannabinoid system with his team
  3. Received honorary doctorates & international awards
  4. Called for the medical use of cannabis early on
  5. Committed to evidence-based research throughout his life

THC: The discovery that changed everything

In 1964, Mechoulam and his colleague Yechiel Gaoni isolated tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) from Moroccan hashish for the first time. They decoded the chemical structure – a breakthrough that had never been achieved before. This discovery was the first to explain why cannabis has a psychoactive effect.

This was not only scientifically relevant – but also politically. Until then, cannabis was considered unpredictable and poorly researched. Mechoulam showed that it has a comprehensible mechanism of action – with potential for medicine and therapy.

  • THC was described chemically for the first time
  • Basis for later studies & dosing models
  • Showed: Cannabis is not a myth, it’s chemistry

CBD & Co.: More than just a molecule

A few years after THC, Mechoulam also analyzed cannabidiol (CBD) – a non-psychoactive compound that can have a calming, anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving effect. Long underestimated, his work brought CBD increasingly into the focus of research.

However, he was quick to warn against “cannabis hype”: not every molecule is a wonder drug – the effect always depends on the composition, dosage and context. He called for evidence-based education instead of marketing promises.

  • CBD: non-psychoactive, versatile in use
  • Research on CBD for epilepsy, anxiety & inflammation
  • Mechoulam called for state-funded studies

It sounds like it no longer exists, but it is still very active, like here in Berlin:

The endocannabinoid system: cannabis works because the body is prepared

In the 1990s, Mechoulam’s team discovered an endogenous cannabinoid – anandamide. It was named after the Sanskrit word for “bliss” (ananda). This made it clear that the body has its own system for processing cannabinoids – the so-called endocannabinoid system.

This system regulates many functions: Sleep, mood, pain perception, inflammation, appetite and even the immune system. Cannabis does not work because it is “foreign” – but because it influences natural processes in the body.

Scientific legacy: researchers with attitude

Raphael Mechoulam remained active in research into old age. He was not an activist, but a scientist – but his work changed public opinion on cannabis worldwide. Without him, there would be neither medical cannabis on prescription nor targeted THC:CBD preparations today.

His scientific precision coupled with moral courage made him one of the most trusted voices in cannabis research. He always argued for safe, standardized applications – and against commercialization without ethical foundations.

  • Published over 400 scientific papers
  • Called for global decriminalization
  • Understand cannabis as a tool, not a miracle cure

Connections to Germany & Europe

Mechoulam also had a strong international network – including with researchers at the University of Leipzig, the BfArM in Germany and the IACM. He was honored at international conferences and was a co-founder of modern European cannabis medicine.

  • Member of the IACM (International Association for Cannabinoid Medicines)
  • Considered the founder of modern cannabis medicine in Europe
  • Inspired reforms in Germany, Israel and the Czech Republic, among others

That was Dr. Raphael Mechoulam: Any questions?

Raphael Mechoulam is a name that is cited in every medical cannabis document. Without him, there would be no targeted therapy with THC or CBD – no extracts, no legalization debate with a scientific basis. He did not see cannabis as a drug, but as a key to human biochemistry.

His legacy lives on in laboratories, pharmacies and legal texts – and in every patient who benefits from cannabinoids today. Dr. Mechoulam has shown the world that knowledge creates change.

  1. Discovered THC, CBD & Anandamide
  2. Founder of the understanding of the endocannabinoid system
  3. Shapes research, medicine and politics to this day
