Ocimene cannabis terpene: aroma, taste, effect & impact

Ocimene is a rarer but exciting terpene in the cannabis plant, known for its fresh, sweet aroma and potential antiviral effects. It has an entourage effect with cannabinoids such as THC and is often found in strains with floral or tropical notes. It is related to other terpenes such as terpinolene, linalool or eucalyptol. In this article you can find out all about the effects, scent profile and possible medicinal uses of ocimene. Back to terpenes in cannabis.

Ocimen: What is that?

einfach erklärt

Ocimene (β-ocimene) is a monoterpene with a fresh, sweet scent. It is not only found in cannabis, but also in basil, mint, lavender and orchids. In cannabis, it is mainly found in tropical-fruity varieties – but it is not present in every variety.

Typical strains with a lot of ocimene are Green Crack, Sour Diesel, Clementine or Purple Haze.

  • Rarer but aromatically concise terpene
  • Occurs in basil, orchids and cannabis
  • Volatile and slightly oxidizing – sensitive during storage

Ocimene in cannabis profiles

Ocimene is usually only detected in small quantities, but clearly influences the floral scent of some cannabis flowers. It contributes to the tropical-sweet scent and can significantly nuance the overall aroma.

Smell and aroma of ocimene

Ocimene is known for its floral, fruity scent – often described as sweet, slightly citrusy and fresh. It adds a bright, vibrant note to cannabis strains and is also used in perfumes.

  • Aroma: sweet, citrusy, floral
  • Associations: Lavender, basil, tropical fruits
  • Important for fresh, bright scents in sativa varieties

Sensory significance

Ocimene enhances the freshness of a variety and is often perceived by consumers as pleasant and activating. It contrasts with heavier, earthy terpenes such as myrcene or humulene.

Effect of Ocimen

Studies indicate potential antiviral, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. Ocimene could also have a bronchodilator effect – which makes it interesting for medical applications.

Medical relevance

Ocimene is still the subject of little clinical research, but shows in vitro potential against viruses and inflammation. It is also conceivable as a possible ingredient in inhalations or natural cosmetics – further research is needed.

Similar terpenes

These terpenes share similar odor profiles or mechanisms of action:

  • Terpinolene: fresh, calming, antioxidant
  • Linalool: floral, calming, anxiety-relieving
  • Eucalyptol: minty, concentration-enhancing, antibacterial

Terpenes?! Where are they actually?

Terpenes can be found on the flower of the cannabis plant. There are (illustrated here for you):

  1. Pestles – small threads
  2. Trichomes – small balls
  3. Terpenes – are inside the small spheres

In fact, the myth of the difference between sativa, indica and hybrid is true. The real effect comes from the terpenes in combination with the cannabinoids (THC, CBD, etc.)
