Geraniol: What is it?

einfach erklärt

einfach erklärt
Geraniol is a monoterpene alcohol with a pronounced rose scent that is found in cannabis, but also in roses, lemongrass, blueberries and tobacco. It is used in the perfume industry, but also has high medicinal potential – especially in the field of neuroprotection and cell protection.
Typical varieties with a lot of geraniol are Black Cherry Soda, Agent Orange, Sweet Pink Grapefruit or Harlequin.
- Flowery-sweet fragrance from plant blossoms
- Naturally contained in many essential oils
- Also occurs in rarer cannabis strains
Origin & Biochemistry
Geraniol is part of the natural protective mechanism of many plants and can repel insects – at the same time it has a calming and mood-enhancing effect on humans.
Odor and aroma of geraniol
Geraniol gives cannabis strains a floral, almost perfume-like aroma. The scent is reminiscent of rose, peach, sometimes even freshly cut flowers – unusually intense and pleasant.
- Scent: rose, peach, lavender
- Aroma: Sweetish, floral, slightly fruity
- Fragrance association: calm, harmony, balance
Sensory classification
Geraniol harmonizes with linalool for a calming terpene profile – popular in indica-dominant strains with a relaxing effect.
“Geraniol is one of the most underestimated terpenes in cannabis – its effect on the central nervous system and its antioxidant properties are remarkable.” – From the review ‘Cannabis Terpenes & Neuroprotection’, 2021
Effect of geraniol
Geraniol not only has an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effect, but also shows promising effects on neuronal processes. Studies indicate a possible application in neurodegenerative diseases. It can also be used as a natural insect repellent.

Research & application
Geraniol is currently being investigated with regard to its effect on nerve cells, Alzheimer’s models and oxidative stress. Initial results show antioxidant properties similar to vitamin C.
Similar terpenes
These terpenes have a similar effect or ideally complement geraniol in the entourage effect:
- Linalool: floral, anxiolytic, sleep-inducing
- Terpinolene: stress-reducing, antioxidant
Eucalyptol : minty, concentration-enhancing, antibacterial
Terpenes?! Where are they actually?
Terpenes can be found on the flower of the cannabis plant. There are (illustrated here for you):
- Pestles – small threads
- Trichomes – small balls
- Terpenes – are inside the small spheres
In fact, the myth of the difference between sativa, indica and hybrid is true. The real effect comes from the terpenes in combination with the cannabinoids (THC, CBD, etc.)
Terpenes in cannabis
A total of over 150 different terpenes have been identified in the cannabis plant. Of these, around 20-30 terpenes occur regularly in relevant quantities and have potential medicinal effects. Find out more about indications (diseases), taste, aroma and effect! What can which terpene do?
