Sam the Skunkman: Skunk #1, Sensi Seeds & the legend
If you’ve ever dealt with cannabis seeds, you’ve most likely already come across Skunk #1. I came across him for the first time today in my Sensi Seeds database research. Sam the Skunkman, a nickname that immediately sticks in your mind. Here’s a look at Skunk, Sam the Skunkman and more about Sensi Seeds. The genetics behind it are shaping modern strains worldwide – and lead directly to one man: Sam the Skunkman. Jack Herer, Mr. Nice & Co. – here you come back to all cannabis legends.
Who was Sam the Skunkman?
Sam, whose real name is David Paul Watson, founded the legendary Sacred Seeds in California. He collected seeds worldwide – from Asia to North Africa – and stabilized skunk genetics over several generations. In the 1980s, he fled from repressive laws to Amsterdam.
- Active since the 1960s
- Founder of Sacred Seeds
- Later move to Holland
Skunk was just a smell at first
Before skunk existed as a strain, it was simply a term: when weed smelled strong, it was called “skunk”. In the 1970s, breeders in California developed real hybrids from it for the first time – a mixture of Afghan indica and South American sativa. One of these lines eventually became Skunk #1.
- Development from 1970 in California
- Intense aroma, stable yield
- First true hybrid on the market

Skunk #1 becomes a global success
In Amsterdam, Sam further optimized the strain and founded Cultivator’s Choice. In 1988, his Skunk #1 won the first High Times Cannabis Cup – and officially became a legend. From then on, growers all over the world worked with this stable, high-yielding strain.

- Basis for countless hybrid varieties
Collaboration with Nevil & Clarke
In Holland, Sam worked with breeder Nevil Schoenmakers, who further developed Skunk #1 into Super Skunk – with an even more intense aroma. At the same time, Sam delved into science with Rob Clarke: together they founded HortaPharm and supplied genetics to GW Pharmaceuticals for medical research.

His focus was always on research, not commerce. But his work laid the foundations for modern cannabis genetics worldwide.
