Seed Bank of Holland: Sensi Seeds, Seeds, Story & Videos

If you want to grow high-quality cannabis from seeds yourself, you can hardly avoid one name: the Seed Bank of Holland. It is part of cannabis history and has brought together many cannabis legends. Even today, tens of thousands of growers in Germany order their seeds here. It has been shaping the European scene for decades – with varieties that now enjoy cult status.

What is the Seed Bank?

The Seed Bank of Holland was one of the first professional cannabis seed banks in Europe. It was founded in Amsterdam in the early 1980s – at a time when medicinal cannabis was still stigmatized worldwide. The aim was to stabilize strong genetics from all over the world and make them available for home cultivation.

Nevil Schoenmakers: The visionary

Nevil Schoenmakers was the driving force behind The Seed Bank. Born in the Netherlands and raised in Australia, he moved back to Holland in 1984 and founded The Seed Bank – the world’s first mail order cannabis seed company – by the way, order your prescription and flowers in Germany conveniently online, with us: Cannabis prescription online. Back to Nevil! He brought the best genetics from Afghanistan, Colombia, Thailand and the USA and made them available to European growers. His work laid the foundation for today’s strains such as Super Skunk, NL #5 x Haze and the Jack Herer variety.

Other heads of the movement behind Sensi Seeds?

The Seed Bank was not a solo project – several pioneering figures in cannabis history were behind its success.

  • Skunkman brought US genetics
  • Clarke stabilized lines
  • Dronkers preserved gene pool
  • Rosenthal supported global

Sam the Skunkman

Sam the Skunkman, the man behind the legendary Skunk #1, brought high-quality genetics from California to Europe back in the early 1980s – a milestone for European cannabis breeding.

Rob Clarke

Rob Clarke Cannabis author and breeder, Clarke was instrumental in the stabilization and selection of many lines. His knowledge flowed directly into the development of the early varieties.

Ben Dronkers

Founder of Sensi Seeds and keeper of genetic diversity. Ben Dronkers later took over parts of Nevil Schoenmakers‘ gene bank and continued many lines.

Ed Rosenthal

As a US grower, author and activist, Rosenthal contributed to the spread of genetics with his knowledge, networking and international influence – even beyond Europe.

Legendary varieties from Holland

Many of today’s top strains originate directly or indirectly from this era. Here are a few of the best-known strains from the original Seed Bank:

  • Skunk #1 – Hybrid base
  • Northern Lights #5 – Indoor cracker
  • Haze – pure sativa
  • Afghani – resinous Indica

Skunk #1 – The base line

Fast, easy to grow and stable – Skunk #1became the mother of many modern hybrids. Here is my video recommendation: Skunk#1 changed the world.

Northern Lights #5 – Indoor legend

Strong Indica with compact growth, high THC content and ideal for indoor cultivation – perfected by Nevil.

Original Haze – pure sativa

The archetype of all Haze varieties. Late-flowering, intense in aroma and with a clear high. The basis for Amnesia & Co.

Afghani #1 – Pure Indica genetics

Robust, resinous and compact. Afghani genetics were a key component of many hybrid crosses.

Remains influential to this day

Without the work of Nevil Schoenmakers and the Seed Bank, many of today’s cannabis flowers would not exist in their current form. His influence extends from Amsterdam to California – and lives on in every Skunk, Haze or Kush line.

  • Influence in today’s varieties
  • Worldwide genetics fund
  • Basis for modern hybrids
