“Anti-aging and increased thinking ability through cannabis” – University of Bonn
Anti-ageing and increased mental capacity through cannabis? These study results are surprising! A recent study by the University of Bonn shows surprising results on the effect of cannabis on the brain. The researchers found that long-term, low-dose administration of THC, the main active ingredient in cannabis, can have a so-called anti-ageing effect (slowing down the ageing process) on the brain. This discovery could open up new avenues for the treatment of age-related mental impairment. Let’s take a look at the details of the study.
THC and the metabolic switch mTOR (a regulator of cell growth)
Research focuses on the protein mTOR, an important switch in the body for cell growth and metabolism (all chemical processes in the body). The activity of mTOR influences the ageing process. Normally, a reduction in mTOR activity, as achieved through a low-calorie diet or exercise, can slow down ageing. However, too much reduction can weaken mental performance because it prevents the growth of new connections between nerve cells(synapses).
- MTOR regulates cell growth and ageing
- THC increases mTOR activity in the brain for better function
Positive effects on synapses (connections between nerve cells) and mental abilities
The study showed that THC can improve synapse density (the number of connections between nerve cells) and mental performance in older mice. THC led to a short-term increase in mTOR activity, which promoted energy production and the growth of new synapses. This suggests that THC could “rejuvenate” the brain.
- THC increases synapse formation in the brain
- Improvement of mental abilities through THC
Double effect of THC in the body
Interestingly, THC showed a dual effect: while it increased mTOR activity in the brain for better cognitive function, it lowered this activity in adipose tissue (body fat) and reduced amino acid and carbohydrate metabolism (the chemical processing of nutrients). These effects are similar to the benefits of a low-calorie diet and could also contribute to anti-aging.
- THC has different effects on the brain and body
- Reduces metabolic activity in fatty tissue
Findings from further studies
Additional research, such as a study by the University of Basel, shows that medicinal cannabis has no negative effects on mental health.
On the contrary, the study found slight improvements in the well-being of users. These findings suggest that medicinal cannabis is not only safe, but can also be beneficial for mental and physical well-being.
- Medicinal cannabis can promote well-being
- No negative effects on the psyche
In summary, research shows that THC, with its various effects on metabolism and mental health, could be a possible option for slowing down the ageing process in the brain.
