MedCanG: How the law for medical cannabis works – production, purchase, quantity & co.

With the Medical Cannabis Act (MedCanG), a new legal basis has been created that clearly regulates the handling of medical cannabis (more specialized than the CanG). From cultivation and import to dispensing in cannabis pharmacies – the law creates legal certainty and sets high quality standards. Here we show you which rules the MedCanG lays down and why it is so important for patients. Tip: News on the Cannabis Act, streamed every week on YouTube: Cannabis Policy News.

What is the Medical Cannabis Act?

Black Cherry Punch: Sträkste Cannabissorte in DeutschlandThe Medical Cannabis Act (more precisely the “Act on the Supply of Cannabis for Medical and Medical-Scientific Purposes”) is the central legal basis for the medical use of cannabis in Germany. It defines who may cultivate, import and distribute medicinal cannabis and under what conditions it may be dispensed to patients. The aim is to improve medical care and at the same time prevent abuse.

The MedCanG thus replaces older regulations and adapts cannabis law to medical needs. The focus is on strict quality controls and seamless traceability.

  • Central legal basis since April 2024
  • Regulates cultivation, import, distribution and sale
  • Creates safety for patients and doctors

Role of the BfArM and the Cannabis Agency

The Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM) plays a key role. Through the Cannabis Agency, it issues licenses for cultivation in Germany and also monitors imports from abroad. This ensures that only certified suppliers with clear standards enter the market.

The Cannabis Agency also monitors compliance with the regulations and ensures that quality and safety are guaranteed at all times. The MedCanG thus fulfills a similar function to other pharmaceutical laws.

  • BfArM as supervisory authority
  • Cannabis agency issues licenses
  • Control of cultivation and import

GMP standards and quality assurance

GMP-zertifizierte Hersteller im Shop

The MedCanG stipulates that medical cannabis must be produced according to GMP standards. GMP stands for Good Manufacturing Practice and ensures that cannabis is treated as a medicinal product. Each batch must pass purity and safety tests before it is put into circulation.

This prevents contaminated or unsafe products from reaching patients. At the same time, GMP certification creates trust and transparency. Our cannabis manufacturers in the store are also all GMP-certified.

  • Obligation for GMP-compliant production
  • Testing of active ingredient content and purity
  • Safety as with other medicines

Why GMP is indispensable in MedCanG

The law prescribes GMP for a reason: Cannabis is a natural product whose active ingredient content can fluctuate. Standardized production processes and controls ensure that patients always receive the same quality and dosage.

Dispensing only in pharmacies

An important point in the MedCanG is that cannabis will only be dispensed in cannabis pharmacies. Doctors can prescribe cannabis on prescription, but it will only be dispensed by pharmaceutical companies. This ensures that every dispensing is documented and checked.

For patients, this means that they can rest assured that their medication meets the highest standards and that the entire treatment chain remains traceable.

  • Prescription only by doctors
  • Dispensed exclusively in pharmacies
  • Documentation of each delivery

What are the benefits of MedCanG? Advantages

The MedCanG brings great benefits for patients. It ensures a safe supply of pharmaceutical-quality cannabis and protects against inferior or contaminated products. At the same time, it creates clear structures for how prescriptions are issued and filled. The legal requirements finally put medicinal cannabis on the same level as other medicines. This means a high degree of legal certainty and trust in the therapy.

  • Safe supply through clear rules
  • Avoidance of quality risks
  • Same standards as for other medicinal products

MedCanG as a milestone in Germany

With the Medical Cannabis Act, Germany has taken an important step towards securing the medical supply of cannabis. From licensing and quality controls to dispensing in pharmacies, the law ensures a clear, safe and transparent system. For patients, this means one thing above all: trust in the therapy and maximum safety.

The MedCanG is therefore a real milestone in German healthcare and creates the basis for the responsible use of cannabis as a medicinal product.

  1. Clear structures and responsibilities
  2. Binding quality and safety standards
  3. More trust and safety for patients
